Review: The Mister by E. L. James

So, it's here. E. L. James's first novel outside of the Fifty Shades world. A highly anticipated read for many, and one I was curious about because I did not enjoy the Fifty Shades series, but I always told myself that if the author came out with something new, I'd give it a shot. Unfortunately, I found there has been no growth in James' writing from her debut novel to what is now her sixth, and I didn't feel captivated by her style or story at all. I pushed to read as much as I could to get a proper feel for the story, but I also promised myself this year I would not force myself to finish a novel I didn't enjoy, so I called it quits at Chapter 19 (63% on the Kindle). Overall my biggest problems with this novel were the writing style, lack of character development, and the plot was missing a fresh, original feel. The characters also followed the same formula as Fifty Shades, so although BDSM was absent from The Mister, it still didn't read as unique. The experienced sex fanatic stud, Maxim, meets inexperienced cleaning woman, Alessia...and click! The characters lacked depth and substance, and I didn't connect to either of them, or feel the desire to invest in their romance. If you decide to give The Mister a shot, I do hope you have an enjoyable reading experience. James' work is clearly not for me, so this will be the final novel of hers that I read.

As I mentioned, this novel is available now wherever books are sold. If you're curious enough to give it a read, I'll post a link to the author's website below (where you can find all release related info) as well as the official blurb.

B L U R B :

London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face. But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own? From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.
