Review: The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton

In The Perfect Girlfriend what began as an intriguing exploration of a spiraling, unhinged woman, and the lengths she'll go to to win back her lover, quickly took a turn at the halfway point, crossing into 'over the top' territory. Character actions and reactions were far fetched. It was difficult to suspend my disbelief- to better enjoy my reading experience- when certain occurrences played out. To fathom that a man who is being stalked and then is essentially kidnapped, handcuffed and detained by his obsessed ex-lover, would then do absolutely nothing once he broke free, I couldn't ignore the absurdity of his non-action. Juliette's leverage against Nate was weak at best, which made his passive nature regarding her actions, all the more difficult to understand or accept as plausible. The final chapter left much to be desired as well. It wasn't impactful or frightening. It just cut. Ended. Finished. And it felt incomplete and unsatisfying. Despite the promising start, this psychological thriller simply didn't meet my expectations. If you're curious about The Perfect Girlfriend, give it a shot. There are many other readers who loved the story entirely! You might feel the same.
