Release Blitz w/ Review: Heartbreak Warfare by Heather M. Orgeron and Kate Stewart
If you enjoy angst, Heartbreak Warfare has got it in spades. It's raw, intense, and heavy on the heart. The book is long, really long, but the writing and the emotion in the story held me captive the whole way through. While this is a military love-triangle romance, it's not only that. It's more than one woman torn between two men, or one person being a cheater. It's not that simple. The situations and the circumstances the characters find themselves in are tragic, painful, and tough. I didn't always agree with or like the decisions that were made, mostly by the heroine, but I also couldn't put myself in her shoes. Katy (Scottie) left for war happy and in love with her husband and her family, promises of forever whispered in their goodbyes, but she didn't come home that same person. Her experience changed her, and the trauma she endured alongside fellow soldier, Briggs, brought them closer together. It was hard to witness the breakdown in the aftermath, and the struggles Katy faced daily once home. My heart went out to her at times. Her husband Gavin, a military Captain, was so supportive and patient with her, giving her space when she needed it and reaching out when he felt she needed strength. Gavin was truly such a sweet and loving man. At the same time, Briggs fell in love with her during her darkest time, and is in love with who she is now. They have a special bond and connection that cannot be severed. He was a great, honorable man too. I understood how Katy was able to be in love with these two amazing men, but I wanted her to choose to live out her life happily with one, and I knew exactly who I thought that should be. Was I happy with her choice in the end? No. Did I think it was the right one? No. Did that grind my gears a little? Yes, but while I may not have gotten the HEA I wanted out of the story, it was still a fantastic reading journey. Orgeron and Stewart delivered a page-turning read that broke my heart and fed my angst-loving soul. A beautifully written novel.
