Review: NEVERLAND by Melissa Jane (New Release)

Synopsis:

On a fateful, stormy night, a ghost from the past revealed himself under the glow of a street lamp. A ghost whose smile was as cold and dangerous as his heart.

He remembered her well.

She was the one everyone talked about. The poor girl down the street born into a family of monsters. The one he’d obsessed over, taunted and harassed.

The very same girl who’d one day suddenly disappeared.

Accepting his hand, he lifted her off the dirty, vile street and whispered a promise, “No good deed comes without payment,” and from that day on, she was destined to pay the ultimate price.

Seeing her for the first time since she’d vanished all those years ago, had only made him realize his obsession never truly ended. And now, with a promise to keep, he was going to make her disappear again… this time forever.

My Thoughts:

This is one of those books that keeps your head spinning and heart pounding the whole way through. One one hand, I couldn't flip the pages fast enough; I was so eager to see just how everything would begin to unfold. On the other hand, this was an emotionally draining reading experience. The MMC (Dominic) was a sadistic creep and I utterly loathed him. My hate fire burned brighter with every passing chapter. Then there was the poor FMC (Lucy) who was dealt blow after terrible blow. The emotional, mental, and physical pain and abuse Lucy suffered at the hands of her Father, Uncle, and Dominic was heartbreaking. She never had anything good in her life except for her friend Romeo and his family. He was a ray of love and light in her otherwise dark world. Now, Neverland is categorized as a romantic thriller but for me, romance never really showed up. It came in a flash and then it was gone. Mostly, it's twisted and disturbing, dark and gritty- for about 85% of the storyline. In my opinion, there really wasn't enough of a romantic element to put it in that genre. So, I loved the suspense element, but I was disappointed by the lack of love story. Overall, Neverland is undeniably an intriguing and well told story. If you are looking for an uplifting, shiny read, this is not it. It is intense, and much of the content is depressing. If you're in the mood for a dark, dramatic and entertaining read though, definitely give this a chance. The ending will have your jaw dropping!
