Review
Family Ties is the first book that I have read by Stephie Walls and it was a sweet and angsty ride. Portia and Jude grew up together, both part of the foster system. But Portia remained in the care of her foster parents- The Shaws, who later adopted her- from the time her mother passed when she was nine, while Jude was in and out over the years. His mom was a good parent, but she was sick, and with no other family to care for him during the particularly hard times, she trusted him with the Shaws. So yeah, they grew up together; close knit. Portia and her parents loved Jude, people around them occasionally referred to them as siblings, but really they weren’t. For me, they were just two inseparable best friends who grew up alongside each other, and eventually fell in love. The characters and their relationships were well developed. They were real and flawed. Both Portia and Jude had their own struggles and obstacles to overcome and their individual journey of growth, development, and maturity was a series of ups and downs. Walls did a great job drawing me in, making me care about the path the characters followed and where their journey would take them. Heartwarming and filled with emotion, Family Ties is a story that will suck you in and hold you close from beginning to end.
