Review: PRETTY GIRLS by Karin Slaughter

Pretty Girls is a dark, twisted, and heavy read. It's a thriller, darkness should be expected, but the mystery/subject matter dealt with in this novel is, perhaps, more disturbingly detailed than some may wish to read about. Warning: This novels contains the following sensitive subject matter- scenes of violence, murder, rape, torture, sadism. This was an uncomfortable read for me, but I finished it. It took me a while to finish because it was quite long and at points in the middle I found the story was dragging. The violent details were also too much for me at times, making me cringe and proceeding to put the book aside for a bit. I thought Slaughter did a great job with creating her characters, I felt for the women involved, the victims of the past and the survivors. I also burned with hate toward the main perpetrator, so she developed a believable villain. Overall, the suspense and crime mystery is interesting enough to keep you reading until the end, if only to find out if they catch the SOB responsible for these horrific crimes.

Synopsis:

Sisters. Strangers. Survivors. More than twenty years ago, Claire and Lydia’s teenaged sister Julia vanished without a trace. The two women have not spoken since, and now their lives could not be more different. Claire is the glamorous trophy wife of an Atlanta millionaire. Lydia, a single mother, dates an ex-con and struggles to make ends meet. But neither has recovered from the horror and heartbreak of their shared loss—a devastating wound that's cruelly ripped open when Claire's husband is killed. The disappearance of a teenage girl and the murder of a middle-aged man, almost a quarter-century apart: what could connect them? Forming a wary truce, the surviving sisters look to the past to find the truth, unearthing the secrets that destroyed their family all those years ago . . . and uncovering the possibility of redemption, and revenge, where they least expect it.
