Review: My Last Love Story by Falguni Kothari

My Last Love Story is a unique concept, a spin on a love-triangle that doesn't have any cheating involved. The blurb intrigued me, but the story turned out to be very different from what I expected, and it never fully captured my interest. I put the book down a number of times but pushed myself to finish because it was an ARC. The plot moved at a slow pace, with a lot of “telling, not showing” in the first quarter. I was bothered, turned off by some situations, such as the ailing husband Nirvaan’s pressure on his wife, Simi, to have his baby. Like she owed it to him- that didn't sit well with me. I didn't connect to any of the main characters, they needed further development- although I found Zayaan the most likable of the three. By the end, I felt there were still unresolved issues, and what really maddened me was that Simi and Zayaan acted selfishly (vague because I don't want to spoil the ending, but if you read the novel you'll know what I'm referring to). Not every novel will be loved by everyone and, unfortunately, My Last Love Story wasn't for me. There are many other reviewers who thoroughly enjoyed the book, so if you are interested in an unconventional love story, give this a try.

Synopsis:

“Promise me you will laugh every day. Fight every day. Do you know how beautiful you look when you’re angry? Promise me you’ll learn to cuss, learn to love again. Live again. Promise me you won’t give up on each other.” Simi Desai is thirty years old and her husband is dying of cancer. He has two last wishes in his final months: first, that she’ll have his baby so that a piece of him lives on, and second, that she’ll reconcile with her old flame, who just happens to be their mutual best friend. And so over the course of their last summer together, Simi’s husband plans a series of big and small adventures for this unlikely trio, designed to help them say goodbye to each other and prove to Simi that it’s okay to move on without him—and even find love again.
