Review: The Lost One by Liz Lovelock
The Lost One is the debut novel by Liz Lovelock and it is followed by part two, The Missing One. The story was intriguing and funny at times. Overall an enjoyable read, but there were a couple things that just didn’t quite work for me.
The love between the two main characters is instantaneous-which I am not against- but in this case I wasn’t feeling it. I could feel their attraction and chemistry, but there just wasn’t enough for me to find the insta-love believable. Melodi was a strong and feisty woman, who had experienced such tragedy, causing her to keep all men a football-field length away. Corban was able to tear that wall down and jump right into her heart within a couple days. That aside, I did like each character, I just wish there was a bit more build-up and growth in their relationship.
I also found myself questioning their ages at one point. They are both adults but Melodi doesn’t have a clue in the world about contraception and her mother mentions never having had ‘the talk’ with her. Then when she talks to Corban he throws out the “I figured you were covered, so I didn’t wrap it up” speech. This all just felt very far fetched and more like something teenage characters would be going through, not two grown adults.
What I did really enjoy was the suspense and mystery, and in the end, you are given quite a shock. I would still recommend this novel and I am looking forward to finding out how the mystery unfolds in The Missing One.
